It's a common misconception that growing kids can eat anything and everything they want, and will still stay healthy because they're naturally active.
Genetic factors are a consideration, but many children imitate bad habits they see in their parents, such as poor diet and lack of exercise. Until recently, parents struggled to accept that children need a diet and fitness plan.
They once believed it was only necessary for unfit adults. However, with the rise in child obesity statistics, parents now recognize the importance of a healthy lifestyle for their kids.

Children today spend about 24 hours a week watching TV and may engage less in physical activities due to computer and video games. Overweight children, like adults, face increased health risks.

What You Can Do

Don't criticize or blame your overweight child. Discuss your concerns about their weight and health, teaching them to accept and feel good about themselves.
Do a reality check on your lifestyle and consider changes. Be a role model by focusing on your diet and fitness, without obsession, and show confidence in your body to your child.
Make exercise a family affair by getting active together. Plan outings with physical activities like biking, trekking, or swimming that everyone can enjoy.
Practice healthy eating habits as a family. Even with busy schedules, prioritize nutrition with fast, healthy recipes from cookbooks. Offer nutritious snacks and teach your child to make healthy food choices independently.
Make changes in family habits to see a big difference. Avoid eating in front of screens to prevent overeating. Eat together, encourage slow eating, and involve your child in food choices and preparation.
For more information on healthy eating and exercise, talk to a registered dietician or a professional trainer, particularly one who has experience of dealing with children. If you feel that your child's weight might cause serious health problems, consult a physician/pediatrician immediately.
It's never too early to start a healthy diet and fitness regime for your child, and never too late for you to make the switch to a healthy lifestyle. Eat healthy and eat right!
